Rebel Alliance History

Written by Crazed Ewok on Feb-14-2006

The Rebel Alliance was formed via the hopes and dreams of freedom and peace of a few idealists, seeing the dark shroud of evil that was the Empire tearing across the galaxy like a towering, advancing wave. Its goals from the very start were clear; to restore the Old Republic and abolish the despotic New Order.

Following the events of the Clone Wars, the revolutionaries and conservatives of the Galactic Senate, such as Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, Padmé Naberrie (who sadly died before the resistance could be finalized) and Garm Bel Iblis, met several times to discuss how to deal with then-Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's frightening string of advances towards more power in the collapsing Republic. Little did they realize, at this time, that the Clone Wars was only a hoax staged by Palpatine to allow for the creation of a dictatorship, with him at the head! They did, however, agree that the republic they loved was being eaten from the inside out, even if they did not know the cause. Like the separatists that the Republic fought in the Clone Wars, the aftermath of which was still being dealt with, the senators schemed to rebel against what they believed would be Palpatine's final declaration of total power.

That moment, unfortunately, came quicker than they had perceived. Palpatine, in a senate meeting following his alleged "attempted assassination" by the Jedi, declared that the Republic was no more and that it would be reorganized into the Galactic Empire, with the corrupt man in the center of it. Unfortunately for the rebel conspirators, his announcement was accepted with joy by many of the senators. Palpatine was in fact a Sith Lord, the sworn enemy of the Jedi Order and the Republic, and that the Jedi's attempt to arrest him was exactly what Palpatine needed to take the action he so longingly desired; total domination of the galaxy.

The Jedi were betrayed by the army that had fought alongside them for nearly a decade. Under the secret orders of Palpatine, almost all of the Jedi fighting against what was left of the separatist threat were destroyed, with the exception of a very few that were fortunate enough to escape. Bail Organa organized an attempt to gather all of those remaining Jedi together. It was at this time that they decided all hope for saving the Republic was lost, and that their only action was to secretly organize an army against the new Empire. However, many senators still kept involved in the Galactic Senate, which was now only there to keep planets under the Republic from rebelling against Palpatine's iron fist. This trend would continue, from Bail Organa to Leia Organa, until the senate was eventually abolished about ten years later. After what was called the Great Jedi Purge, the remaining members of the broken Jedi Order went into hiding. The infant daughter and son of the Jedi-turned-Sith Lord, Anakin Skywalker, and his wife Padmé, were given to Bail Organa and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectfully. They were deemed as the last hope for the galaxy when they grew up. As for their father, Anakin, he was now known as Darth Vader, and was the half-man, half-machine strict enforcer of the Emperor's will.

An official declaration of Rebellion was delivered to the Empire. Of course, the dominion would not stand for it, and vowed to hunt down all members of this Alliance and totally destroy them. However, the Empire's position was weakened slightly by several weapons suppliers and ship builders which contributed their products to the Alliance. Ships such as the X-Wing were supplied in this way. This proved that many organizations also agreed with the Rebel Alliance's grievances, but just didn't have the courage to go as far as making an open declaration. However, the Alliance still did not have the forces, at first, to oppose the strong Empire outright. They made guerilla raids; they attacked shipping routes, stole technology and raided space stations for any supplies they could.

The Alliance also formed treaties with non-human races. Since the creation of the Empire, non-humans were treated as little more than dirt. Alien races were usually barred from the military and any government positions. The Empire showed similar discrimination towards women. Due to that, the Rebels found many allies in alien races. One of these, the Bothans, had a highly advanced and informative network of spies, which was invaluable to the Rebel Alliance. The Bothans alerted the fledging Alliance to the creation of a "Death Star"; a superweapon powerful enough to destroy an entire planet. The leaders of the Alliance had no doubt that the Emperor would be perfectly willing to use the technological terror on any world giving refuge to the insurgency. The plans for this vessel were stolen by Kyle Katarn, a Rebel mercenary, and then passed on to Leia Organa.

An Imperial senator that was secretly a member of the Alliance, Leia was enroute to her adopted homeworld of Alderaan on the Tantive IV to deliver these plans to her father, under the guise of a "mercy mission." However, her ship was intercepted by an Imperial Star Destroyer and she was taken prisoner. However, she managed to transmit the plans, via a small droid, to the surface of the closest planet, Tatooine. As the plans were recovered by a farmboy named Luke Skywalker, Leia was taken to the very heart of the giant; the Death Star itself. She was subject to intense interrogation regarding the locations of the Rebels' main base, but she refused to give up the answer. Finally, she was forced to lie as the Imperial Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin threatened to destroy Alderaan. However, even though Tarkin believed her fake answer, he proceeded with the destruction of Alderaan. Leia was forced to watch as the billions of lives on Alderaan were hopelessly turned to embers in the relentless wake of the Empire. For many, it showed that the Empire was willing to stop at nothing to destroy the Rebellion, which drove people to two different outcomes: joining the Alliance, or not siding against the Empire out of fear for their own lives.

Skywalker, a rogue smuggler named Han Solo and the out-of-hiding Obi-Wan Kenobi infiltrated the Death Star. Leia and Luke, together for the first time since their birth, did not recognize each other, nor their father. Vader struck down Kenobi in personal combat. With the death of one of the last remaining Jedi Knights at hand, Solo, Organa and Skywalker all fled the Death Star and regrouped. After a daring space flight by Skywalker, chased by Darth Vader himself, the Death Star was incinerated. However, the Rebels took this bittersweet victory with caution. Alderaan was destroyed, and Vader had escaped. Nevertheless, three medals were awarded that day to Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Han's co-pilot, Chewbacca.

The Rebels quickly left Yavin, and shortly after the planet was bombarded by the angered Imperial forces. They found a new base on Hoth and set up camp, though the Empire found them shortly after and initiated a full-scale invasion. The Rebels were forced to split and take refuge at various places throughout the universe. During this time, Luke Skywalker went to seek out the ancient Jedi Master Yoda on Dagobah, and Han Solo and Leia Organa proceeded to Cloud City. All of them were lead into a trap staged by the Empire, which dealt a hard personal blow to Leia and Luke, as Han was captured by the Empire and sold to the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Luke lost his right hand in a duel with Vader, shortly before Vader revealed to Luke that he was, in fact, his father. The Empire established a garrison on Cloud City and the Baron Administrator of the city fled with the Rebels.

The Rebels then launched an attempt to rescue Han, who was now delivered to Jabba the Hutt, his former employer whom had placed a bounty on Han's head for a previous falling-out. This led them to first contend with the "Dark Price" Xizor, who led a crime ring involved with the Empire. Initially, an alliance with this man was attempted to be established between the Rebels, but it ultimately fell through. Xizor imprisoned Leia within his palace on the Imperial capital of Coruscant and the Alliance retaliated. However, the Empire also retaliated, as Darth Vader learned Xizor's entire scheme was to capture Luke Skywalker and deliver him to Emperor Palpatine, so that he would gain favor with aging man. Xizor desired to take Vader's place, and the Dark Lord of the Sith knew it. The whole conflict ended with Xizor and his lethal space station destroyed at both Rebel and Imperial hands. During this time, intelligence provided by the Bothan spies informed the Alliance of plans for a new, more powerful Death Star on a cargo freighter. The Rebels captured it and decoded the information, but at a great cost in Bothan lives. Also, unbeknownst to them, the Emperor had intentionally allowed the Rebels to receive the plans, which would later be used to lure the Alliance into a final trap...

The Alliance finally regrouped sufficently enough to organize an attack against the second Death Star. Skywalker and Organa had conspired to rescue Han Solo, who was now made a general along with Lando Calrissian. The Alliance prepared to attack where the Death Star was stationed; the forest moon of Endor. Solo lead a ground force to deactivate the new shield generator for the massive space station, and Calrissian led the space force into the bowels of the beast to finally destroy it. More importantly, they had also learned that the Emperor himself was personally overseeing the final stages of its construction. When they arrived, they found more than they bargained for. Solo encountered heavy resistance in taking down the shield generator, though was aided by the indigenous local tribe of aliens called Ewoks. Calrissian ran straight into the Imperial fleet and was nearly destroyed when lethal blasts shot out at the Death Star - towards the ships themselves! It was clearly a trap.

It is worthy to note of the conflict going on inside the Death Star. Luke Skywalker, now in custody of the Emperor, fought against his father in an epic struggle against his own dark urges and Palpatine's evil intentions. He intended to allow the son to destroy his father and place Luke as his new apprentice. Fortunately, Luke resisted and subjected himself to horrible torture by Palpatine. However, Vader, at the last second, threw Palpatine down a shaft to the superstructure of the Death Star. Anakin Skywalker, after realizing the peril of his son, died shortly after.

The Alliance destroyed the Death Star and foiled the plans of the Emperor. Galaxy-wide, all planets celebrated as the evil reign of the Emperor was finally over. The Alliance, now renaming themselves the New Republic, continued to fight the remnants of the Empire, but they had achieved their objective. The Republic was restored, and the Jedi Order was slowly beginning to reform.
